We’re Supporting the New Real Living Wage Rates!
To kick-off 2019’s Living Wage Week (11th-17th November), the Living Wage Foundation has announced the new Real Living Wage Rates. The UK Living Wage is now £9.30 an increase of 30p per hour. The London Living Wage has also risen to £10.75 per hour, up 20p on the previous year.
The rates are independently calculated based on what people need to live on, the growing costs of childcare and private rent being the most influential factors for the new figures.
Over 210,00 workers across nearly 6,000 real Living Wage Employers are set to benefit, with the new UK rate £1.09 per hour, and London £2.54, more than the Government’s minimum wage for over 25’s. A full-time worker paid the real Living Wage will receive over £2,000 UK wide and around £5,000 additional wages compared to the Government minimum equivalent to between 9 to 12 months’ worth of a family’s food, drink, gas and electric bills.
Living Wage Foundation Director, Katherine Chapman, said:
“In this time of uncertainty today’s new Living Wage rates give a boost to hundreds of thousands of UK workers. Good businesses know that the real Living Wage means happier, healthier and more motivated workers, and that providing workers with financial security is not only the right thing to do, but has real business benefits. This year for the first-time cities and towns have announced big plans to grow the number of Living Wage Employers in their communities. We are delighted at the ambition of Cardiff and Salford to build Living Wage cities, with Cardiff planning to double the number of workers getting the real Living Wage to nearly 50,000, freeing many more families from the low pay trap. We hope to see many more towns and cities follow suit.”
All companies in the APG Group are Living Wage Employers. If you’re ready to become a Living Wage Employer too, you can find out more here.
About the Living Wage Foundation
The Living Wage Foundation was established in 2011 and grew from a Living Wage Campaign, launched in 2001 by members of London Citizens, which has since become the nationwide institution Citizens UK. They are at the heart of an independent movement campaigning for a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work, celebrate employers who choose to go further and pay a real Living Wage based on the real cost of living. The campaign for a real Living Wage has delivered 1 billion in extra wages to workers since 2001 and has lifted over 200,000 people out of in-work poverty.
